The family story is that Joel was attacked by two men whom he stabbed in self defense and leftfor dead. Joel then fled to MO joining Sarah Alread. He later went to the western part of Van Buren co. bordering Pope co. AR abt 1853/54. He then changed his name to Joseph Brown. The 1860 census im Van Buren co a Joseph Brown age 37 is listed along with Parizeddy Brown 38;Thomas Alread 16;Angelina Brown,20; Lucinda Brown,22; Savannah Luster Brown,11;Catharine Brown,9; all born in TN; and Winfield Brown,6; John Brown,4; and Joel Brown,2, all born in AR. There were twomore children born after 1860. Joel/Joseph enlisted inCo.E,2nd Regiment Arkansas Cavalry, U.S.Army in Van Buren co AR 12 July 1863. He served in MO and wasdischarged in Sept 1864. He died in 1867 of inflammation of the lungs contracted while in the service. His widow applied for the govt pension in 1882. The witnesses were Jacob Copeland,Solomon Alread and G.W. Gamlia.
